KINGSTON, N.Y. — Three children and a dog were rescued from a roof midday Thursday after a fire broke out in their second-floor apartment on Broadway, according to a city fire department official.

None suffered any injuries, but one firefighter had to be treated for smoke inhalation, Deputy Chief Darren Bondar said.

The children — boys ages 14 and 6, and a 13-year-old girl — called 911 about 12:40 p.m. to report a fire in the apartment at 728 Broadway in Midtown, Bondar said. He said they were kept on the phone with dispatchers until firefighters arrived minutes later.

The children’s mother was not home at the time, he said.

Bondar said the blaze began outside the building, on the first floor, traveled up a wall and inside the apartment, where it blocked the only exit. He also said there is no fire escape on the building.

The children escaped by climbing through a window and onto a roof, Bondar said. Firefighters helped them down a ladder from there.

The apartment is above Arcane Video, which Bondar said was not damaged. There was some damage, though, to the exterior of the Eng’s Chinese restaurant, which is next door, he said.

The apartment was declared uninhabitable by the city Building Department but needs only “minor repairs,” Bondar said. He said the residents are staying with relatives.
