Williamsburg Fire Engulfs Woops Bakeshop, Five Injured

Five people, including three firefighters, were injured Wednesday morning in a two alarm fire in Williamsburg. The blaze consumed the first two floors of 522 Driggs Avenue, near the corner of Driggs and North 7th Street, causing serious damage to Woops Bakeshop.

Firefighters responded to the blaze just after 7 a.m. this morning. It soon escalated to a two-alarm fire, at which point 110 firefighters from 25 different units were deployed to extinguish it. An FDNY spokesperson told Gothamist that the blaze had been put under control by 8:17 a.m.

Two civilians were hospitalized with minor injuries in connection to the fire, and three firefighters were also treated for wounds at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center. An investigation into the cause of the fire is currently underway.

Passerby Chris Dulgerian tells us “heavy smoke was coming out of the Woops Bakeshop and the apartment right above it” when he passed by the scene at 7:15 a.m. “Ladders were up to the roof of the building and I could see FDNY helping several residents down the fire escape. About 15 minutes later, FDNY started breaking out the windows to the front of the bakeshop and the apartment above it.”

On their Facebook page, Woops writes, “Woops! a fire broke out in our Williamsburg building’s location. Thank goodness, everyone is safe and sound, but sadly, we will be closed until further notice. If that’s your local branch and you find yourself needing a Woops! fix, know that we have four other BakeShop locations in NYC.”

FDNY Deputy Chief Kevin Woods told DNAinfo that heavy smoke and flames encompassed one apartment on the second floor. “We pulled two people from the window on the second floor,” he said.
