Architect Shows the Beauty of Fire Escapes through Photographs
A visual survey of the design and aesthetics of fire escapes, featuring photos taken in twenty-five US cities
Peter’s passion for photography and art paved the way for his Urban Forms as Art series. The series is meant to showcase American urbanism, its unique development, and forms.
More than for aesthetics, architects are the guardians of public safety in man-made environments. The fire escape is a device designed after the fact, allowing people a safe escape during emergencies. It’s a second means of egress not included in the original design. Peter Lagomarsino traveled around many US cities to capture photographs of diverse types of fire escapes. He exhibits his artistic imagery, along with a look at fire escape designs, with emphasis on their utility. All this he shows in his book, “The Fire Escape: A Visual Survey. Second Edition.”
Peter’s passion for photography and art paved the way for his Urban Forms as Art series. The series is meant to showcase American urbanism, its unique development, and forms. After the release of the first edition of his visual survey of fire escapes taken in twelve cities, he was enticed to photograph more of them as he continued to travel.
The second edition features thirteen new cities—twenty-five cities in all. Mr. Lagomarsino’s travels for architectural commissions enabled him to assemble this exhibition and elevate the visual complexity of fire escapes to a viable art form in man-made environments.
“The Fire Escape: A Visual Survey. Second Edition” is a mix of art and technicalities, a visually appealing book made to enrich readers’ love for the artistic side of architecture, as well as it’s more fundamental aspects. The book is published under LitFire Publishing and was displayed at their booth during the sixty-ninth Frankfurt Book Fair in Germany, from October 11 to 15, 2017.
